Kestrels have excellent eyesight and can see colors in the ultraviolet light spectrum. This allows the kestrels to see and track urine trails made by small mammals. Kestrels eat invertebrates, small rodents and birds. There are reports that they also take on snakes and squirrels. They also tend to hide surplus food for feeding on at a later time.
